High speed SCF syringe filling line on greenfield site
To commission a new production line is a daring task for any pharmaceutical manufacturer. In addition, if the project is implemented on a greenfield site – without any infrastructure in place – then it is an enormous challenge, as budget and time frame required strict adherence even under these conditions.
What had been achieved so far? Nothing!
The new production site, 12 km away from Moscow, was only a project. At the onset of the venture, a parcel of land had been preselected, not even bought. Access roads, electricity, gas, water, canalization?? Later! To enable the use of the premises as a production site for pharmaceutical products, some infrastructure was required first. The closest network spot for the lot’s development is located 7 km away. The only noteworthy advantage to the location is a highway intersection 200 km away.
At that time, the Russian company investing in the new site had absolutely no experience in syringe filling. The aggressive time frame was targeting that the syringe line was to achieve a capacity of 20 million doses during a production period of approx. 12 to 16 weeks. The drug, however, is a seasonal pharmaceutical. A delay of just a few weeks or months would lead to a defaulted market entry for an entire year.

Optima Group Pharma succeed-ed in complying with the time frame originally scheduled for the high speed syringe line. But ultimately, the lack of infrastructure delayed the market launch by one year. The first media fills succeeded in May 2008, followed by production of the first three batches in June 2008 to obtain the manufacturing license. Regular production launched smoothly in August 2008.
